Victoria Square
Title: Victoria Square
Built in: 1994
Short intro: A revitalised victorian square at the heart of Birmingham
Description: Formerly the Victorian ‘Council House square’, Victoria Square was renamed in 1901 to honour Queen Victoria, a bronze statue of whom now stands in the square. Victoria Square is often considered to be the centre of Birmingham, and provides a short walk to many major attractions and sights in the city. From the square, it is just a short walk to St. Phillip’s cathedral, as well as the Bullring shopping centre and Brindley Place, home to many canalside eateries. Birmingham’s ornate council house, which partly houses Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery, towers over the square. One can also find Birmingham Town Hall, now a concert hall. The square is home to a prominent and unique sculpture: Mistry’s fountain The River is better known as The Floozie in the Jacuzzi, and has been transformed in recent years from the fountain to the flower bed, and includes statues of two striking sphinx-like creatures.
