Birmingham Roundhouse
Title: Birmingham Roundhouse
Built in: 1874
Location: 102 St. Vincent Street, Birmingham B16 8EB
Short intro: a rare surviving complex of nineteenth-century industrial and civic buildings
Description: Birmingham Roundhouse was originally used as a local authority depot, stables and storage. A design competition in 1870 was won by Birmingham architect William Henry Ward, and the building’s structure is based on his schematics. William is also responsible for other iconic elements of the city: such as the Great Western Arcade. Birmingham Roundhouse is currently under renovation by the national trust, thanks to the national lottery heritage fund; Historic England, and the Canal and River Trust. The site will become a new focal point for the city canals, where one can explore the waterways by boat, foot, or cycle, by early 2020!
