Ikon Gallery

Title: Ikon Gallery

Built in: 1877

Location: 1 Oozells Square, Brindley Place, Birmingham B1 2HS

Short intro: Internationally acclaimed contemporary art venue.

Description: The Contemporary art gallery, Ikon, is housed inside a Grade II listed former Board School built in 1877. Ikon was established in 1964 to encourage public engagement in contemporary art. In its Brindley Place location, Ikon has two floors of temporary exhibitions that display a variety of media: from sound and film to photography, painting and sculpture. The gallery’s off-site programme builds dynamic relationships between artists and their audience, and as an educational charity, they still meet their original intention of educating and engaging the public with bold installations. Ikon can be enjoyed alongside the other attractions of Brindley Place, and the Gas Street Basin, with a local eatery, Yorks Cafe, sharing the Ikon’s space.
