Short intro: The epicentre of Birmingham’s canal system
Description: Birmingham’s extensive canal systems, the Birmingham Canal Navigations, have their heart at the Gas Street Basin, to be found at Brindley Place. The Birmingham Canal, completed in 1773, would be joined to the neighbouring Worcester canal in 1795, after iron and coal companies argued that connecting the canals would help them transport their wares. The Gas Street Basin provides access to Birmingham’s central canal network, made up of over 100 miles of waterways. Being next to Brindley Place, the Basin provides the ideal place to unwind in the middle of a busy city: taking in the scenery at the waterfront restaurants and bars. Alternatively, you can explore the waterways on foot, or by taking a boat trip.
