Religious demographics
This week our CEO has provided me with a basic structure for the book I will be writing! This has shaped the work I will be doing which can now be more specific and thorough, leading me into the next phase of the internship- content writing. My focus has turned to writing up some draft pages for the book, starting off with the three most significant religions in the region: Christianity, Islam and Sikhism.
My research this week has been aimed at trying to understand more about why these different groups have settled in Birmingham. Most people know that Birmingham has a large Muslim population. However, did you know that in Birmingham more Muslim children are born each year than Christian children?
Furthermore, there are over 200 mosques in Birmingham that support its Muslim population of 300,000! Birmingham has had a Muslim community ever since the 1930s with people migrating gradually over the years for a variety of reasons including labour shortages in the UK after WW2 or when doctors were recruited to help our NHS in the 1960s.
These ‘background stories’ have unfortunately been quite difficult to research as it seems few people have questioned the reasoning behind Birmingham’s multi-faith society. To overcome this issue, I hope to approach and interview some Brummies who have lived in Birmingham and witnessed the transformation of its religious demographic. I’m excited to learn more about this topic and hopefully gain some insight from some local people!
