Title: The Birmingham Botanical Gardens
Built in: 1832
Location: Westbourne Road, Edgbaston, Birmingham B15 3TR
Short intro: Birmingham’s botanical gardens: Edgbaston’s green heart.
Description: Birmingham Botanical and Horticultural Society opened the Botanical Gardens in 1832, and their layout has changed very little since then, with the four glasshouses added in the decades after the garden opened. Each glasshouse is dedicated to plants from different environments: tropical, subtropical, Mediterranean and Arid. In addition to this, the Botanical Gardens are home to the British National Bonsai collection, with Bonsai specimens some 250 years old. The gardens feature aseasonal butterfly house, as well as exotic birds: cockatoos and parakeets can be seen in the aviary, and a small group of peacocks roam wild in the grounds.
