St Paul’s Church

Title: St Paul’s Church

Built in: 1777-1779

Location: St Paul’s Square, Birmingham

Short intro: An original Georgian Church, and its surrounding square

Description: St Paul’s Church and the surrounding square was built upon land granted by Charles Colmore from his Newhall estate. It was the Church of Birmingham’s early manufacturers and merchants alike. Matthew Boulton and James Watt had their own pews. Originally, the church had a flat roof, but its spire was added between 1822 and 1823. St Paul’s Square was an elegant, desirable spot in the mid-nineteenth century, even as its surroundings were overtaken by the workshops and factories of the bustling Jewellery quarter.
