Soho House

Title: Soho House

Built in: 1766

Location: Soho Avenue, Birmingham B15 5LB

Short intro: The elegant home of industrialist Matthew Boulton from 1766 to 1809

Description: Matthew Boulton acquired the land next to Soho house, once Soho mill, and developed into the Soho Manufactory: an early factory that pioneered assembly lines and mass production at the very start of the industrial revolution. An existing cottage was extended and modified to make Soho house. The house has been restored with its original eighteenth-century appearance. At Soho House, visitors can see the kind of products that would have been produced at the manufactory: buttons and buckles; clocks and vases; silver plate. Visitors can see where James Watt and Matthew Boulton developed their steam engine, that revolutionised manufacturing and has been seen as vitalising the industrial revolution.
