Little Elgar

The Little Elgar programme is an opportunity for school and university students to write their own chamber music. This music will then be used in our Vlogs that promote the exciting heritage and culture of the West Midlands. We feel that it’s important to support local industry including the arts, so we want to help young local composers get their music out there and help to boost their personal statements and CVs.

Edward Elgar was, of course, a very famous composer from the Midlands and we hope to aid in carrying on this tradition of brilliant composers in the area and aid in them releasing their music.

What type of music are we looking for?

As the music will be accompanying speech in the Vlogs the music will have to be instrumental. Furthermore, the composer needs to understand that this music will have speech over the top so it must be of a genre that accompanies this well and not too fast. The composer may choose the selection of instruments written for, but must also be aware that this will have to be recorded and due to current restrictions there may be issues getting hold of large numbers of instrumentalists. For this reason, we are limiting the ensemble size to no more than 6 people. If you would rather use fewer this is completely fine.

Project Outline

Submissions: The composer should aim to present WeiPoint with the sheet music as well as an audio file with their composition. We do not of course expect the audio file to include real instrumentalists, a simulated version will be just fine. We think the best way of presenting this will be through the use of software such as Sibelius or Noteflight (a free software similar to Sibelius) which will provide you with both of our requirements.

Length: This composition should last around 5 mins including repeats should any be included. The composer should be aware that their composition may be edited slightly (perhaps with extra repeats or a few cuts) in order for the music to last the exact length of our vlogs. We will, of course, try to avoid this however we reserve the right to in case this is necessary.

Prizes: The winner/winners of this competition will have the honour of their music being used in our short documentary vlog series about interesting heritage sites around Birmingham. This may lead to other requested compositions as our library of documentaries grows.

Submission Date: To be announced
