Weoley Castle

Title: Weoley Castle

Built in: around 1069

Location: 135 Alwold Road, Birmingham B29

Short intro: the remains of a medieval manor house

Description: The ruins of Weoley Castle were likely built as a hunting hall by the Lords of Dudley. The castle would have once stood within a thousand-acre park that reached as far as the city centre, where the lords could hunt deer. The ruins that remain are one of the oldest still visible buildings in the city. The fortified manor is called a castle as it would have had a moat, curtain wall, towers, battlements, as well as an imposing gatehouse and great hall. The ruins, now grade II listed following renovations, are open to the public, providing a link to Birmingham’s medieval past.
