Warstone Lane Cemetery
Title: Warstone Lane Cemetery
Built in: 1847
Location: Icknield Street, Birmingham B18 6PL
Short intro: Victorian cemetery and catacombs in Birmingham’s jewellery quarter
Description: This site has many names: Warstone lane Cemetery, but also Brookfields Cemetery, and Mint Cemetery (so named for the adjacent Birmingham Mint) A major feature of the cemetery is its two-tiered catacombs, whose haphazard construction was directly responsible for the Birmingham Cemeteries Act, that required such structures to be sealed with lead, or pitch. The cemetery once had a chapel, dating back to the sites original construction in 1847, but this was demolished in 1954. All that remains is the striking blue brick gate lodge, which has survived in its original state since 1848.
